As scary as are the observations in Jordan's note, even more frightening is the
realization that little, if anything, will be done to prevent the very probable
predicted disasters from happening. Profiteers will continue to destroy the
habitat until the Big One hits, and I don't mean earthquake. I'm very much
afraid that unless the common folk of the world are able to force our "leaders"
out of their collective stupor, we'll simply remain in this destroy-and-wait-
for-the-inevitable mode until the inevitable happens. The upsurge of the
world's indigenous peoples as a vocal political power may, if we are lucky,
be happening "just in the nick of time." At least, we can hope so.
