The annual election for the council and chairperson of the council will
be held Saturday, October 8, 1994 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the tribal
headquarters on Mohheconuak Rd. in Bowler, Wi. The election has been
held on the second saturday in October since the early 1900's. The
canidates are selected by a caucus which meets in the month of September
- in accordance with tribal law and tradition.
The current chair has, according to tribal sources, violalted the tribes
constitution at least 21 times in the past year. Most recently, she has
canceled the elections saying the caucus was illegal. She realized she
was about to be voted out of office and this was her response.
The people are in great turmoil. They have been meeting weekly to
discuss the issues. Sources say - THERE WILL BE AN ELECTION!!!
The elders of the Stockbridge - Munsee are asking for all tribal members
to come out and vote. Also they are asking for assistance in saying to
the BIA to stay out of tribal affairs. ( BIA misinformation has made
this situation worse). And, if members of AIM are available to come to
the area to assist in facilitating the election and healing the wounds
of the community, it would be appreciated. And as always, prayers are
needed.
Please, address all information to me and I will forward it ASAP to the
elders of the Stockbridge - Munsee. thanks.
