A friend of mine who does not have access to e-mail has asked me to find out
if anyone on the network knows where the following information can be found.
Basically, this is a request for a list of the Tonkawa survivors of the
Anadarko Massacre of 1862. According to the information he has, 2650 people
died and 310 survived this attack on 10/23/1862. The survivors eventually made
it to Ft. Griffin, Texas and in 1884, 92 of them were relocated to Oklahoma.
The decendants of the 92 are now the Oklahoma Tonkawa which is a federally
recognized tribe. The decendants of the 218 who remained in Texas are as far
as anyone knows are still in Texas and many of them are well aware of their
heritage but they have never organized well enough to be federally recognized.
If anyone can give some clue where to get this list can respond to me at
curran@astro.as.utexas.edu or back to Native-l and I will pass it on to him.
Thanks, Dian Curran
