COURSE ON "SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE, 1995"

The University of Minnesota will be sponsoring a course tittled,
"Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture" to be held at the Itasca
Biological Station of the University of Minnesota, Itasca, Minnesota.
The course will focus on models for sustainability present in the world
today, and transfer methods used by researchers to elicit
indigenous fishing and farming systems knowledge important for the
future of aquatic resource management. Study of the Itasca biological
ecosystem, its pristine lakes and intact fisheries will serve an an
example of an undisturbed set of ecological interactions. Field research
will be conducted on the largest freshwater cage system in the US,
located in mine pit lakes in Northern Minnnesota in order to elucidate
the interactions between aquaculture and the environment. Lake microcosms
will be used for intensive study of limnobiology and chemistry during the
course. Guests from the international fisheries and aquaculture community will
be invited.
Cost of the course is US$ 750 which includes full room and board for
the 5-week period.
The course will be led by Dr. Barry A. Costa-Pierce, Associate Professor
of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, U. Minnesota and the Minnesota State
University System.
