I have a questions about the Nakota. My father always said that
that Yanktonai, (not the Yankton) had split from the rest of the tribe
when everyone was in the WI and MN area. They had headed west to
where Montana presently is and were forced on a reservation there. My
father said the Assiniboine were the Nakota. He speaks Dakota and can
clearly understand the Assiniboine language. Any thoughts on this? I
realize the Assiniboine don't like to be thought of this way, I went
to school with many who didn't like being thought of as related to
their enemies.

Anyway, I thought the linguistic theory was interesting.

I too have been told by my Grandfather what
Alexander has said. I will also bounce a
copy of this to Nat-lang and see what those
folks have to say. Perhaps they can help us
