During the Youth-at-Risk Conference at the National 4-H Center near
Washington D. C. this year, we met 4-H agents from various Indian
Reservations across the nation. South Dakota and Alaska to name a
couple. The idea itself is not new but between Reservation it is fairly
new. The Alaskans have a very dynamic program. Many of our children
have not visited out-of-state, much less, Alaska. AND with the advent of
INTERNET, it is much easier to plan and communicate with other
Reservation programs. Through INTERNET, we have been able to maintain
and strengthen friendships made at the conference.

The 4-H exchange would bring young people in contact with other Native
young people. Although they are all Native American people, they have
very diverse cultural differences. The cultural exchange would not only
bring them closer together but would also strengthen their own cultural
identity and enhance their self-esteem. The 4-H program gives our young
people an opportunity to visit places in the United States they would not
otherwise visit. 4-H is also a place to explore career opportunities
that would enable Native young people to return tot heir own reservations
to work in their chosen field of study.

If you wish to explore this idea further just call us or contact us on
INTERNET. Katherine Vann, Program Associate, 4-H/Youth Dev. or Duncan
