The Tonkawa tribal attorneys have announced the probable opening in
January of 1995 of an Off-Track betting facility for horse racing simulcasts
from around the country.
The new facility, which is in the planning stages, will house the
gaming operations, including Bingo-related games and be able to handle about
75 people. Later add ons will depend on business growth.
The new facility will be built on tribal land, either near Tonkawa, OK
or near the old Chilocco Indian School north of Newkirk, OK. Tribal leaders
are negotiating with a management firm to run the operation.
Negotiations with Oklahoma state officials are continuing regarding
other types of casino games.
The 325 member Tonkawa tribe is the first in Oklahoma to receive
Federal and State approval of its gaming compact. Negotiations took about 6
years.
Recently the tribe voted down the possibility of nuclear waste storage
on tribal land.
