In the 1800s, most of the Powhatan Indians got reclassified as something
else. Virginia passed a law that if at least one parent was white in the
last 3 generations, you were white. And if you could document that both
parents were Indians for at least the last generation, then you were
Indian. Otherwise you were automatically reclassed as "colored." That
was their solution to the "Indian Problem."
