Paula, I'm Nick Clark, chairman of the Minnetrista Council for Great Lakes
Native American Studies headquartered in the Minnetrista Cultural Center at
Muncie. We are a consortium of 20 Woodland tribes who network on cultural
activities. We have an annual pow wow here at the Cultural Center the fourth
weekend of June. I am very familiar with drums from federally recognized
tribes in the Great Lakes, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. We have five drums
for our pow wow. The two host drums are paid honorariums of $800 each and
the three invited drums are given $450. The arena director is paid $250, the
Master of Ceremonies $300, the Head Veteran Dancer $250, the Head Man Dancer
is paid $300, and the Head Woman Dancer is paid $300. The Veteran Honor
Guard (Flag Bearers) are paid $100 each. The give away is budgeted at $500
and we provide a welcome feast on Friday evening and a thank you feast on
Saturday evening. This costs about $1,000. We also have a t-shirt for each
dancer, head staff and singer. This costs about $$850 but is made up in
sales to those attending. We spend about $1,000 on programs and marketing.
There are other incidentals. We do not have contests because our tribal
chiefs, chairmen and elders believe that it cheapens and detracts from the
purpose of a pow wow. We do charge $3.00 per adult, children are free. We
normally have 4,000 to 5,000 when it doesn't rain. We have a very
traditional pow wow with no gimmics and no staff or singers that are not
authorized by our tribes. All of the Delaware, Shawnee, Potawatomi and Miami
tribes that were historic Indiana tribes are part of MCGLNAS and I have
contacts for all their pow wow representatives. I also have schedules of all
the major pow wows in the Great Lakes so you won't have a conflict. Our pow
wow costs from from $12,000 to $15,000. If I can help further call me at
1-800-428-5887. Good luck!
