When the FBI raided Crow Dog's Paradise after the June 26th shootout at
Oglala, Anna Mae was among those picked up. In what was believed
to be a deliberate attempt to imply that she was an informant, SA David
Price exclaimed, "We've been looking all over for you!". She was
taken to the Federal Building in Rapid City and held for questioning.
While they were interrogating her, she told them, "You can either
kill me, or put me in jail; those are the two choices I'm taking.
Besides, that's what you're going to do anyway." (Mattheissen,
224-235). Unfortunately, I can't find the exact citation where
she was threatened "You'll be dead within a year." (Sorry, I'm
trying to look this up on line!
Larry Long did an excellent job of putting Anna Mae's story
to music, there was very little literary license taken with it.
