Guarani Campaign Update

Dear friends,

We just received news from Marta Guarani that the
situation in Jaguapire remains the same, and that they
need us to keep up the pressure on Judge Rotta.
When I was in Mato Grosso do Sul in September, I visited
Jaguapire, as well as several other Guarani communities.
The Guarani are fighting for their land, despite continued
problems with ranchers and a judiciary system which
constantly rules against them. The community of
Jaguapire also has an agricultural project, which is
important because it means life: with each seed planted,
hope for the future is born. And that is why we need to
strengthen our pressure on Judge Rotta.
Over the years, Amanaka'a has worked with RAN and
several RAGs on various campaigns and actions. Last
year, many of you joined us in protesting the massacre of
16 Yanomami, which was essential to "making a lot of
noise", as Davi Yanomami asked us to do. We hope you
join us for the Guarani Campaign, too. There are many
ways to get involved, from sending the enclosed postcard
to holding a benefit for the agricultural project. All help is
welcome and will be greatly appreciated!
Please take time to read the enclosed brochure and send
the postcard. We have postcards, brochures, and
background information here at the office, and will be
glad to send them to you if you want to distribute them.
Please let us know what you can do in your area, be it
drumming up media attention, staging a protest, or doing
a fundraiser. Together, we can put strong pressure on
Judge Rotta, and hopefully make the difference that keeps
the Guarani-Kaiowa of Jaguapire alive.
Please call me at Amanaka'a if you have any questions,
suggestions, or need more information or materials - I
look forward to hearing from you and to continuing our
work together!

In solidarity,
Christine Halvorson
