PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE - IT CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT
REPLYING TO NativeNet MAILING LIST ARTICLES.

Recently a couple of messages have been received via the *posting* address
for NAT-EDU ("nat-edu@gnosys.svle.ma.us" or "nat-edu@indycms.iupui.edu")
which are clearly intended for the author of a previous posting to the list.
Both of these messages were requests for information which had been offered
to anyone who is interested (more on these offers in a moment).

Please be aware that if you send a reply to a message you receive from the
INDYCMS LISTSERV, which handles broadcast of NAT-EDU articles, your article
will go to the posting address for the mailing list, *not* to the person
who wrote the article contained in the message you have received. This
fact is due to the address of the author of the article not appearing in
the message header. Both the "From:" and "Reply-To:" header lines are set
to "point" back to the list itself, so as to make it easy to post followup
articles.

In order to reply to the author of an individual article, you must use
the address that appears in the "Original Sender:" line that appears at
the start of each article received from the LISTSERV. You must copy this
address manually and send a new message to it in order to communicate with
the individual person who has sent an article to which you would like to
respond. (These facts are true for all of the NativeNet lists, including
also NATIVE-L, NATCHAT, NAT-LANG and NAT-HLTH.)

Recently, Harold Ormsby sent an article which begins:

| Subject: Counting & Time systems
| Date: Sat, 21 Jan 1995 02:31:12 GMT
|
| Original Sender: ormsby@servidor.unam.mx (Ormsby Lowry Harold-CELE)
|
| Due to a change of machines, our communications have been a mess. These
| comments deal with "things past."
|
| (1) To those who asked for bibliography on the survival of the vigesimal
| counting and/or the ancestral calendric systems: Please send me a personal
| message again. The file I put your messages into got zapped...

If you want to ask Harold for a copy of his bibliography, please use the
address "ormsby@servidor.unam.mx" to make a request.

Earlier, John Berry posted an article that said:

| Subject: Re: Teaching Math to Native Americans
| Date: Thu, 5 Jan 1995 18:09:00 GMT
|
| Original Sender: vm.cfsan.fda.gov!fdacd.bitnet!berryj (John Berry)
|
| To all,
| While ERIC doesn't have everything - I do have a nice downloaded
| bibliography on "Cross-Cultural Education" that might help people interested
| in the situation of "mixed" classrooms. If you'd like to have a copy via
| E-Mail, let me know: BerryJ@FDACD.Bitnet
| John Berry

As John indicates, you must use "berryj@fdacd.bitnet" to communicate with
him. Use "berryj%fdacd.bitnet@vm.cfsan.fda.gov" if you have any problems
with the first address. This is an example of an address that carries
with it a gateway component - but it's rendered in "bangpath" form in the
"Original Sender:" line. You should not see this sort of thing very often.
When you do, it's generally sufficient to drop everything up to the last
hostname on the line ("fdacd.bitnet" in this case) and reverse the name
and address components, placing an at-sign ("@") between them (to produce,
in this case "berryj@fdacd.bitnet").

If you ever have any problems with such things, please drop me a note.

Good luck!

Gary
