Jim Shupe wrote in regard to a notice alledgedly in "Indian Country"
that said that Edward Benton Banai/Bawdwywidun tells us that

>no "Three Fires Midewiwin Society" teachings that one might find in
>print or tape are sanctioned by said society. In addition that, by
>implication, none of the authors talking about such faith or way of
>life is valid or accurate ("approved" or "endorsed").

Jim asks:
>Anyone know about this guys validity? It's awful easy to put something
>in the paper... does he have the authority to saw what he has said...?

O.K..... I do not know him personally, but we used his book "The Mishomis
Book" as our text book for our Ojibwe culture & language studies last
year with visiting Ojibwe teacher Dennis Jones (from Fond du Lac
Community College).

Mary Ritchie knows his family personally, and perhaps she can add something
if she's willing. Both sides of his family are Midewiwin, if I'm not
mistaken. So I would assume that he is in a position to say what is
official Midewiwin teaching and what is not ... I myself have never heard
from a "Three Fires Midewiwin Society" teachings ... 7 fires (in general)
but not a Three Fires Society. But hey, I'm hardly in a position to say
what exhists & what doesn't where the Midewiwin are concerned. Hopefully
someone with more "book learning" than the "relocated before birth" will
come forward.
