To all,
From 12/94 Knight-Ridder Service;

First regulatory decision under the "new" rules, the BIA has denied
tribal recognition to the Alabama MOWA Choctaws. MOWA members claim descent
from Choctaws, Cherokees, Creeks, & Chickasaws who managed to avoid removal
during the 1820-30's.
The agency found the "Acknowledgement petition", one of the requirements for
federal tribal recognition was insufficient.
The head of the BIA branch of Acknowledgment & Research, Holly Reckord
said, "What we found was that the Indians that the MOWA claimed as their
ancestors, were not their ancestors."
