I am Inupiaq, Hopi, and San Luiseno Mission; I'm a senior at Dartmouth
College and will be teaching 2nd grade in rural Alaska after I graduate. I
have been asked by a local school (here in new hampshire) for ideas on how to
integrate the study of native americans into their curriculum. This is for
their summer program, grades 4 through 9; the children and teachers are
primarily white. I have some ideas of my own but would like to hear what
anyone else has to offer.
One thing I think would be really good to include is literature by
native authors about native culture. For example, Michael Dorris' book
"Morning Girl" is great. If anyone could give me more authors/titles I'd
really appreciate it.
Of course there is also art and music which could easily be
incorporated. I also think that if there are native people (whether they are
artists or not) living in the area it would be a good idea to have someone
visit the classroom and just talk with the children. Often when young kids
"study" native americans they get the impression that we are all gone now.
I don't want to make this too long so i'll just leave it open from
here. Please email the net or myself. Here is my email address:
