Please tell Mr. Bradbury that he has the opportunity to break new ground
in his documentary by including the viewpoints and concerns of indigenous
WOMEN-- something 48 Hours, 4 Corners, the NY Times, Science magazine,
etc. failed to do in their coverage of logging operations in PNG.
Indigenous women throughout Melanesia are primarily responsible for
subsistence food production, and are often the first to feel the
ecological crunch.
I spent last summer in East Sepik Province gathering womens opinions on
this issue. The East Sepik Council of Women (ESCOW) is one
education/activist group in Wewak that is working intensively on the
logging problem that Mr. Bradbury could contact, although the
anti-logging group is mostly, if not entirely, men.
I speak Pidgin, and would be willing to help Mr. Bradbury to obtain
women's viewpoints, as they are often reluctant to talk to men.
