According to John Swanton's _Indians of the Southeastern United States_,
the best source on Karankawa is the narrative of Cabeza de Vaca.
Swanton doesn't give much information, and suggests that relatively
little is known of them. They apparently were in Texas more than
Louisiana (_The Historic Indian Tribes of Louisiana_ also suggests this)
and were "relatives" of Tonkawa and Atakapa, culturally similar and
probably linguistically related. I know there was a little linguistic
work on Atakapa and Tonkawa back in the middle of the century, but don't
have references at hand. This area is not one of the real strengths of
my library, and someone else might be able to provide more information.
Good luck!
