Subject: Thoughts on Br's legacy of colonialism

Hi. Jamie K's comments on seals and sealing, and the article he posted
that reflects the Inuit point of view, reminds me of the important
work that needs to be done here in Europe, especially in Britain, to
make people aware of their colonial history and their continued
colonial activities.

Since arriving in Britain last September, I've had several
conversations with people here at the University of Wales who were
not even aware that Indigenous peoples exist in Canada! It's been a
culture shock for me, to say the least.

Before I left Canada, a Dene friend urged me to learn more about
the links between the self-determination movements in Ireland, Wales
and Scotland and those of Indigenous peoples in the Americas. He
also suggested I read a book by Walter Rodney: *How Europe
Underdeveloped Africa* which explains why Africa's
colonial period is directly responsible for the serious economic and
political problems facing the African continent today.

If anyone is interested in discussing this issue, please
post a reply or e-mail me directly. Thanks.
