I'm a public history graduate student at ASU. I'm working on the history
of a local community here and was wondering if anybody out there knows of
a similar situation. Guadalupe, Arizona was founded by a group of Yaqui
Indians. At the time they had just escaped Mexico and sought refuge in
the U.S.--who gave them political asylum. When it became clear that many
would not return to Mexico, a local priest and judge established a townsite
for the Indians, not a reservation as they were not recognized as a tribe
by the US government (until about 15 years ago).
The land remained in trust to the judge for fifty years when parcels of
land were finally allocated to the "squatters."
Thanks in advance for your help.
