2ND ABORIGINAL DEATH FOR 1995 - HOW MANY MORE?
"The hanging death of Brian Joe Ballard at Long Bay Jail Hospital on
Wednesday 1st March 1995 is the second death to occur this year. The
question of how many more of our Brothers and Sisters must die before
the relevant custodial Recommendations are utilised on a daily basis
is unknown, but every Aboriginal family lives in abject fear when a
family member is incarcerated within police cells or prison walls,"
said Ray Jackson.
Brian Joe Ballard (aged 20) was found hanging by a sheet at 6:00 pm
by prison officers at the Long Bay Jail Hospital in Sydney. We
believe resuscitation was tried but to no avail.
"Our people scream for justice; scream for proper daily utilisation
of the Royal Commission Recommendations. Three deaths in three
months -- all in New South Wales prisons -- is too high a price for
our people to pay.
"When is the New South Wales Government going to order the daily
utilisation of the Royal Commission Recommendations?
"When is the Department of Corrective Services going to instruct all
of their officers to recognise, understand and utilise the Royal
Commission Recommendations on a daily basis?
"The deaths must cease and only full and proper recognition and daily
utilisation of the Royal Commission Recommendations by all custodial
officers is going to allow this to happen," said Ray Jackson.
