I am a writer who is working on a non-fiction piece on the High Sierras of
California. I find that I cannot separate the story of the land itself
from the early people who lived there in such harmony with their
surroundings. There is not only the beauty of the land, but the beauty of
those who kept it as it was and is -- who protected and gave as well as
received from that land of incredible loveliness.

I believe that the ancient stories of the beginnings of those high Sierras
are like river stones which are worn smooth by the ages so that they lie
comfortably in the hand; the story tellers stories are also worn smooth by
the ages so that only what is essential remains -- essence truths --
kernels of wisdom -- explained with elegant simplicity.

Would anyone please share with me any of these stories -- the many-told
stories of the High Sierras?

Thank you.
