I am a 5th-year senior at the UW-Madison currently enrolled in a seminar
entitled "Shining and Other Paths: Anatomy of a Peruvian Tragedy, Prospects
for a Peruvian Future" (also the title of an upcoming international
conference) taught jointly by Steve Stern and Carlos Ivan Degregori. For a
research topic, a colleague and I have chosen to look at the Shining Path
and the Ashaninka. We are particularly sentitive to issues of nationalism
and ethnicity and how these can in turn help us to understand better how a
group like Sendero can operate and perhaps gain sympathy in a region
inhabited by indigenous people yet marked by the presence of settlers,
narcos, missionaries, the military, and other such powerful forces.
Any suggestions or sources (articles, books, internet news sources,
important people, contacts, etc.) would be greatly appreciated. We have
conducted intense searches on our part, but this topic has yet to be
explored in depth so there isn't that much out there.
Please contact Gilles (gcombris@students.wisc.edu) or Leo

Thank you!
