A good place to start is Rolf Knight's _Indians at Work: An Informal History
of Native Indian Labor in British Columbia, 1858-1930_ Vancouver: New Star
Books, 1978. Unfortunately, it is out of print, but you should be able to
find a copy somewhere--knight is cited all the time. There are other sources,
