As part of the National Archives Civil War series, Laurence M.
Hauptman, author of "The Iroquois and the Civil War: From
Battlefield to Reservation," will discuss the role of Ely S. Parker,
a Seneca Indian Sachem, who served as assistant adjutant general,
division engineer, and military secretary to Ulysses S. Grant and
brigadier general. As General Grant's scribe, he drew up the
articles of surrender, signed by Robert E. Lee on April 9, 1865. The
book is published by Syracuse University Press and Mr. Hauptman will
be available to sign copies. The event will be at the National
Archives at NOON in the theater at 7th & Pennsylvania Ave., NW,
Washington, DC. on Thursday, April 6, 1995.
