ASSISTANT DIRECTOR/ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES/AMERICAN STUDIES
UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO

We invite applications for a tenure track position as Assistant Director/
Assistant Professor with training in interdisciplinary cultural studies
in the humanities and/or social sciences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have a PhD (or be an advanced ABD candidate) in Native
American Studies, American Studies, Cultural Studies, Ethnic Studies,
English, History, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology or other
related fields. Advanced ABD candidates will be expected to have the
degree in hand or very close to completion at the time the appointment
begins.

The candidate will teach a range of courses in Native American Studies,
at the undergraduate and graduate levels, for the Native American Studies
department and the American Studies Department. He/she should have
training and research interests in such issues as cultural appropriation,
intellectual property rights, self-identity, popular images of American
Indians, and the implications of these issues for public policy and
Indian self-determination. A background in Southwest Studies would be a
welcome strength. The appointment will begin in the Fall term of 1995-96.

This is a full-time, 9 month, joint appointment between the American
Studies Department and the Native American Studies Program. The
appointment will be split, with 50% time being awarded as a tenure-track
Assistant Professor in American Studies and 50% time being awarded as
Assistant Director of Native American Studies. The candidate will be
eliglible for tenure in American Studies.
