There were several alternatives proposed for the Wounded Knee
Memorial. These include a bi-cultural site, a sacred site, or healing
site for the Lakota. The intentions of the memorial are to tell the
story from the Lakota point of view, recognizing that the wasichu
view has been widely written while the Lakota version is not well
known. There was a lot of Lakota input for the alternatives, and some
views are to leave the site alone, which is a valid view. But at no
time have I heard that the purpose of the Memorial is to "commemorate
a spineless massacre of women and children by a gallant army so
yuppies will purge its guilt ridden conscience". Uniformed and
insensitive views like this will not lead to any healing. If someone
wants to express their opinion that is fine, but I wish that they
would have some knowldege of the subject before they start jumping to
conclusions and expressing their views to all of us.
