I'm at home, so can't supply biblio info--nor, alas, will I be able to,
for a few weeks--but perhaps someone else out there will be able to fill
in the gaps for me/you: there's a book by Will Roscoe (at least I'm
pretty sure that's his name) that came out maybe 5-7 years ago from one
of the University presses; it tries to be a broad study of berdache
traditions in many of the cultural traditions that have survived Contact.

Before that, seems to me there was a short but strong essay written by
Maurice Kenny on your topic.
