There is a new push on to open the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge to
drilling for oil. No need to go into detail on how this would further
devastate indigenous cultures in the region.

Here are the key players.

Sen. Frank Murkowski of Alaska and
Rep. Bill Archer said Tuesday they intended to make a strong
effort to open part of the Arctic National Wildlife refuge to
oil drilling this year.
Murkowski has stated on the record, ``The Alaska delegation will work
very hard to get action this year ... on the Arctic oil reserve,''

Bill Archer, a Texas Republican and chairman of the House Ways
and Means committee has stated (also on the record) ``Don and I are
committed to opening ANWR.'' (He was referring to Rep. Don Young,
R.-Alaska.)

These men intend to attach their agenda on budget or tax bills in order to
sell their changes as a way of paying for tax cut-backs which would mainly
benefit the wealthy in this country.

They are in Washington this week trying to raise support for their agenda.
