I've been wondering the same thing. I've also been thinking about
calling the Smithsonian to see if they might already be in the process
of putting together a CD version of the Handbook Of North American
Indians. The possibilities are almost limitless. Not only could one
access articles and photos, but they could include Music, etc.
Please let me know if you find out about any such CDs.
