PROJECT BACKGROUND
An unconventional method of assisting individuals to trace their American
Indian ancestry is the American Indian Seven Generation Genealogical
Project (SGGP). The SGGP is a revitalized method used to connect up to
seven generations from where one begins. Its origin stems from a
teaching that each individual is the answer to prayers echoed seven
generations ago. Through the Seven Generation research process,
individuals become focused to the footprints of the past to experience
growth in the present. It allows individuals to know their ancestry
experientially with the enabling power to pass that knowledge to future
generations.
TAN believes if individuals can be guided to consider this process and
allow themselves to objectively investigate their past, they will become
conscientiously aware of events which have impacted their lives and the
lives of their grandparents. This knowledge and growth will instill
greater pride, confidence and perhaps lighten the load of uncertainty and
frustration. This growth will minimize stress and emotional trauma
resulting in a balanced and perhaps longer life span.
The Seven Generation Genealogical Project will be more than a "How to
trace" project, it will focus on "How to grow by tracing ancestry"
process. The initial step will be for individuals to officially notify
TAN of their desire to acquire the service by submitting a letter of
request outlining details of their history. Upon receipt of this letter,
an assessment will be made. TAN will then schedule a workshop for
individuals to become fully informed of other pertinent steps at which
time a determination will be made between individuals of TAN whether or
not to proceed.
