More military flights get cabinet OK
OTTAWA (CP)--The number of low-level military training flights over
Labrador will increase despite protests by natives in the region.
Defence Minister David Collenette said the government will negotiate
with NATO allies to increase flights to 15,000 or perhaps 18,000 a
year from the current 6,000 to 7,000.
At the same time, an institute will be set up to monitor environmental
effects of the flying. The Innu people of Labrador will be invited to
participate.
"Our opinion is that the federal government is really spineless on
this issue," said Daniel Ashini, an official of the Innu Nation.
