Press Release
The Hague, May 3, 1995
INNU-SUPPORTERS OCCUPIED DUTCH AIR-FORCE TOWER.
We are just informed that this morning around 9.30 a.m. dutch
time two peace activists climbed in the 80 meter ASCON-tower of
the Dutch Air Force Base Volkel. They hanged out a banner in
solidarity with the Innu in Nitassinan (known as Labrador and
Quebec, Canada).
The tower stands on the road from Erp an Boekel near the base
Volkel in the south of the Netherlands.
The military police surrounded the tower, but it is hard to get
them out. By a earlier action the fire-brigade refused to co-
operate. Probably the only possibility to get them out is by a
military helicopter.
It is nice warm spring weather in the Netherlands, so it will
take some time to get them out.
The supporters are solidary with the Innu who are effected by the
low-level flights of Dutch F-16's on their territory.
>From Volkel a squadron F-16's exercised above the Innu and the
Netherlands will increase the amount of flights above Nitassinan.
On October 12, 1992 ("Columbusday") the two joined the Innu in
the occupation of the airstrip of the Dutch Air Force Base
Volkel. A court decision acquitted them free.
The last weeks they held different actions on different airbases
in the Netherlands. The have cut fences and went on the air
stripe and/or painted texts in solidarity with the Innu.
