NativeNet: series of articles on the way

Dear NativeNet list subscribers:

I have just returned from an extended trip, which is why it has been
so long since I have been in touch. I was away for most of April and
a couple of weeks of May, during which time the lists have been under
the care of Jay Brummett, who has been moderating all the lists (not
only NATIVE-L and NATCHAT, as he had been), and Mary Kuhner, who has
been handling the administrative end of things, as she has been for the
past year or so. Jay will be unable to handle moderating for another
couple of weeks or so, and Mary will be away for a week, so I'll be
handling both jobs for the time being.

Though there is a backlog of articles on all the NativeNet lists
awaiting approval, I've decided to be somewhat selective about which
articles are passed through for the next several days, in order to
avoid flooding you all with more mail than you can handle and so that
I can take advantage of the lull to communicate with you about a few
matters that I feel are important to address at the present time. I
would like to ask you all to hold off sending new articles to the
lists (NATIVE-L, NATCHAT, NAT-LANG, NAT-EDU, NAT-HLTH and NAT-1492)
until I've had a chance to clear the present backlog, which shouldn't
take more than a few days.

First, I will be sending a series of short articles going into various
aspects of the lists:

1. purpose of each list
2. addresses to use for posting articles
3. procedure for setting "nomail" mode and unsubscribing
4. procedure for setting "index" and "digest" modes
5. searching list archives and retrieving articles
6. sending mail to article authors
7. anything else I can think of

Anyone who is new to the lists or has any doubts about any of these
subjects should read the appropriate articles carefully, since doing so
will make life much easier for you and for the moderator of the lists.

After this series of articles, I will send another series going into
other matters, such as various projects which we have talked about
from time to time over the years which could use some assistance.

Thanks in advance for your attention, and apologies to those who are
on more than one of the lists, who will receive multiple copies of
these articles.

Gary (NativeNet lists listowner)
