'Siyo,
Wendy,
A book called, if memory serves, DANCE BACK THE BUFFALO, presents the
history of the religion. THE NATIVE AMERICANS contains pictures.
Check under Wovoka, Paiute. Also, Big Foot's Minniconjou. Shirts
were white muslin with special symbols--used to stop white soldiers'
bullets. By giving up white contaminants (alcohol, etc) and dancing,
adherents could assure the following: the buffalo would return, the
dead would come back to life, and whites would disappear. I could be
wrong, but I don't think there are any ghost dancers left, and it was
a pan-indian movement--so if you wanted to recreate a ghost dance
shirt and did it with respect, probably no one would care.
