"Slave and Enclave: The Political Ecology of Equatorial
Africa," by Marcus Colchester, World Rainforest

native inhabitants due to the incipient political
liberalization of Gabon, Congo and Central African
Republic. Concludes that despite national political
maneuverings towards modernity and stabilization, the
forests are still defenseless, since the rights of local
peoples and land ownership have yet to be recognized.

"Amazon Worlds: Peoples and Cultures of Ecuador's

colorful coffee-table book about the indigenous cultures
of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Some chapters written by
indigenous leaders themselves. Profits donated to several
organizations with which RAN works. Available in English
or Spanish.

"Out of the Amazon," by Sue Cunningham and Ghillean
Prance, $39.95, HMSO,London, England, (1992, distributed
by UNIPUB 800-274-4888) ISBN 0-11-250074-9. A
photographic exploration (with accompanying text) of
Brazilian rainforest, including river life, plants, fruits,
flowers, and peoples. Chapter on environmental
destruction.

"Eat Smart in Brazil," by Joan and David Peterson, $12.95
(+ $2 shipping), Ginkgo Press, Box 5346, Madison, WI
53705, 608-233-5488, ISBN 0-9641168-3-9. Although
designed for people who will either travel or move to
Brazil, "Eat Smart" also includes a list of mail order
suppliers in the U.S., so you can create the tastes of Brazil
in your own home!

"Reflections of Eden: My Years with the Orangutans of
Borneo," Birute M. F. Galdikas, $24.95, Little Brown, ISBN
0-316-30181-7. Louis Leakey's third protegee (along with
Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey) recounts her 20 years of
working with Borneo's orangutans. Her scientific
discoveries and international efforts to protect them from
poachers and loggers have made her a leader in
environmental conservation.

"Livable Planets are Hard to Find: An Overview of our
Terrestrial Home for the Layperson," by Irving W.
Knobloch, Ph.D., $12.00, 6104 Brookhaven Lane, East
Lansing, MI 48823-2216. Self-published compilation by
RAN member includes chapter on rainforest.
