Long-awaited negotiations between the Lubicon Cree of Alberta and the
Canadian government start this June, to finally settle the Lubicon's land
rights after close to sixty years of broken government promises.
To support the current negotiations between the government of Canada and
the Lubicon Lake Nation, and at the request of the Lubicon, the Aboriginal
Rights Coalition (Project North) is calling on people of faith from around
the world to form a chain of prayer.
YOU can participate in the chain by praying regularly that effective
negotiations will lead quickly to a just resolution of this long standing
conflict. Prayers will continue until an agreement is reached. Prayers are
requested for the negotiators for all parties (the Lubicon, the federal and
the provincial governments) and for the Lubicon people.
You can participate by registering with the Mennonite Central Committee
(address below) for $10. In return, you will receive information about the
prayer chain and regular updates about the Lubicon struggle and the
negotiations. If you register, the Lubicon Lake Nation Women's Circle will
also make three moose hide chain links for you: one link will be sent to
you, one link will be added to the chain displayed in the Lubicon community
throughout negotiations, and one link will be added to a chain presented to
Indian Affairs Minister Ron Irwin.
