Looking for Information on the Taino

A friend of mine, who is from Puerto Rico, is trying to find her Taino roots.
Would anyone on the list have any ideas or people to contact about the Taino?

Unfortunately, this was the people that first met Columbus, so modern day
information treats them as being extinct.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Peace

Glenn

Comments from NativeNet listowner, Gary Trujillo (gst@gnosys.svle.ma.us):

I heard an interview on a National Public Radio series ("Vanishing Home-
lands") several years ago with Jose' Barreiro, who is editor of an excel-
lent publication of, by, and about indigenous peoples produced at Cornell
University in Ithaca, New York called _AKWE:KON_ ("All of Us"). In this
interview, Jose' spoke about the Taino and Arawak peoples and how they
have not in fact vanished. Jose can be reached at Cornell University via
the address "Jose_Barreiro@qmcampl.mail.cornell.edu"
