A Business of Development?
Bioprospectors, Indigenous People, and the
Pharmaceutical Industry in Northeastern Peru
The thesis is a case study of bioprospecting and indigenous people in
northeastern Peru. Using the International Cooperative Biodiversity
Group-Peru project and Shaman Pharmaceuticals as primary examples, it
explores bioprospector's associations with the Aguaruna and Huambisa
peoples. The current state of Aguaruna and Huambisa medicinal plant
knowledge is assessed as well as its relationship to Western intellectual
property systems. Strong emphasis is given to analysis of the increasing
role non-governmental organizations are playing in bioprospecting
agreements. Appropriate methods of developing direct equitable links
between pharmaceutical companies, ethnobotany researchers, and
indigenous people are considered in detail.
A MA/MS thesis in Latin American Studies and Community and Regional
Planning from the University of Texas at Austin that includes nearly a
dozen color photos and numerous charts and diagrams. I will take "orders"
until 5/23/95 and then send all requests in one batch. If you are
interested, please respond soon, as I will likely not be able to handle
individual requests later on.
FOR PEOPLE WITH ACCESS TO A MACINTOSH (PREFERRED):
The 116 page thesis is available via the internet or on diskette as a
Macintosh PDD ("portable digital document"). It may be printed from any
Mac with Quickdraw GX - no other software is necessary. The PDD is roughly
analagous to the EPS files used on many systems, except that the PDD may be
viewed on-screen using SimpleText. Most new Macs, including all PowerPC's
as well as many Centris and Powerbook models are sold with Quickdraw GX
installed. Thus if you own or have access to a newer Mac, the thesis can
be printed by simply dropping the archive on your printer icon.
NON-MACINTOSH SYSTEMS (NOT PREFERRED):
While it is my preference to distribute the the thesis as a PDD, if you do
not have access to a Mac there are two other options: First, e-mail me and
let me know you are interested. If there are enough requests I will try to
find an electronic means of sending it that a peecee or other system can
handle. Sorry, because of size EPS is not a viable option. Alternatively,
I will send a loose leaf, black and white paper copy to you.
SPECIAL NOTE: Many e-mail systems cannot handle large documents. While I
will split the 5MB archive into pieces for mailing, please make sure that
your system can handle segments as large as 500kb before you ask me to send
it to you. If you or a friend has an anonymous FTP server, please tell me
and I can put the archive directly onto your system.
