Aloha to all on the NativeNet:
This is to inform any out there who are interested of two efforts to
network and professionalize Indigenous Peoples planning activities. The
first is a new newsletter which is appropriately titled "Indigenous
Planners" that is a collaborative effort of an ever growing interest in
planning being done by and for Indigenous Peoples. This newsletter is
being produced by the Sovereign Oneida Nation of Wisconsin in
collaboration with others. For a copy call the Oneida Planning Dept. at
1-800-236-2868 or write to same at P.O. Box 365 Oneida, WI 54155. It is
my hope that this initial issue of the newsletter will get widely spread
around and discussed. Any comments or issues which you would like to see
addressed would be most welcome.
The second effort will be a panel presentation at the upcoming
Canadian Institute of Planners/American Planning Assoc. Annual Conference
in Toronto April 8-12. While the entire conference may prove of
interest; the panel on April 9 (8:45-10am) titled "Planning and Native
People in U.S. and Canada" may be of particular interest. There will
also be a networking meeting for Tribal/Native Planners on Tuesday
(7:15-8:30am). The panel should be addressing planning issues from a
Native American/Hawaiian perspective. This will be a marked contrast
from the usual "planning for minorities" viewpoint - that is rarely given
by a member of the group being planning for. Just to put some context
into this information - "planning" is very broad but encompasses, at a
minimum, such things as sovereignty, self-determination, economic
development, cultural and religious practice, legal and justice systems,
governmental structure, housing, intergovernmental relations, human and
natural resource management.
I encourage any who are interested to ask for a copy of the
Indigenous Planners newsletter and I'd be happy to correspond with anyone
who would like to hear more about Toronto or Hawai`i. Contact me
personally at my e-mail address (sderric@hinc.hawaii.gov). Aloha
pumehana (warmest regards), Scott
