O Kimo Ko`u inoa. He Kanaka Maoli o Hawai`i wau.
I am Kimo Cashman, a native person from Hawai`i. For the past five years
I have been working with a group of young contemporary Hawaiian artists
who are trying, with the use of contemporary western and traditional
Haawaiian art media, to help educate the masses on the plight of our
people. As we Hawaiians fight to regain our sovereignty that was stolen
by america, we artists attempt to facilitate the concerns of our people
through our works. We struggle with issues that make our insides heavy
and or hearts burn with anger. We have been exhibiting together in
Hawai`i and recently have sent our works to america where we are
currently exhibiting at Western Washington University in Bellingham,
Washington. The works are in response to the stereotypes about our
people and our homeland. They are the voice of the new generation of
Hawaiians. The exhibit is scheduled to open 6/2/95 and will run through
the month of June. The exhibit will coincide with the visit of two
Hawaiian voyaging canoes, the Hawai`iloa and the Hokule`a, to
Washington. This is an important time for Hawaiians as we stand with our
ancestors and embrace what is rightfully ours.
Anyone interested in Contemporary Hawaiian art encouraged to
respond.
