I know this isn't usually an "employment office" of jobs other than directly
related to Indian agencies/programs, but with all the talk/controversy
about the Human Genome projects around the world, I thought I would share
these two listings. Some of you may be curious enough about the projects
to actually want to apply for them, if only to get the questions in your
mind answered. As salaries at Stanford go, the pay isn't even low for a
Technician I. Here are those jobs:

POSITION: LIFE SCI TECH I (#J950625-TCC). Salary: A18, $12.20-12.80.
Bargaining unit. Posted: 06/05/95.

DESC: Life Sciences Tech I to work at the Stanford Human Genome Center
to generate high resolution maps of the human genome & to develop
technologies to make it possible to determine the entire DNA sequence of
the human genome. The goal of this subproject is to generate DNA markers
& to determine which human chromosome on which they are located by
using the polymerase chain reaction assays. Duties will be to: learn how
to perform simple polymerase chain reaction assays & measure the sizes
of the products by gel electrophoresis, input data from these reactions
into a computer database for analysis by the supervisor, perform other
basic lab duties; & support & comply with governmental & University
guidelines regarding health & safety.

QUALS: Some laboratory experience in Biology or molecular biology
would be helpful but is not required. We will train the individual to do
the duties required for the job. The individual must be able to follow
directions once taught the procedures, work meticulously, & be able to
keep good records. The individual must be able to work closely with a
team of coworkers to accomplish a common goal.

Bargaining unit. Posted: 06/05/95.

DESC: To work with a team of seven other coworkers at the Stanford Human
Genome Center, a group of about twenty-five total workers, on a project
whose goals are to generate high resolution maps of the human genome &
to develop technologies to make it possible to determine the entire DNA
sequence of the human genome. The goal of this subproject is to make a
high resolution map called a radiation hybrid map of the genome. Duties
will be to:learn how to perform simple polymerase chain reaction assays
& measure the sizes of the products by gel electrophoresis, to input
data from these reactions into a computer database for subsequent
analysis by the supervisor, perform other basic lab duties & support &
comply with governmental & University guidelines regarding health &
safety.
