Article downloaded June 1, 1995. [The last similar story, about
the roadblock at Adams Lake,BC contained some misleading information,
corrected by a reader, about the difference between a roadblock and a
blockade. This article seems to create the same confusion: is it a
roadblock or a blockade -- are some people/vehicles allowed to pass
or is the road completely blocked off? If anyone has the info,
please post it here. Susan]
NATIVE ROADBLOCK RESUMES, RANCH ROAD SHUT DOWN
Story by Daily News staff (Kamloops)
The battle between the Upper Nicola Band and the owners of the Douglas
Lake Ranch escalated again today when natives returned to a blockade
on a road leading to the ranch.
A press release from the band stated that the Upper Nicola members
have "committed themselves to unconditionally supporting neighboring
nations in the protection of the aboriginal rights, interests, and
concerns from any desecration or encroachment."
The dispute began last month when natives were charged in the courts
after using gill nets in a small lake on ranch property.
The roadblock came down after the Supreme Court issued an interim
injunction ordering the band to cease and desist.
"We, the Upper Nicola Band are of the opinion that the Province of
British Columbia has no jurisdiction over Upper Nicola Band
traditional territory," the band council said in a statement today.
