Peter Coon:
There an article done by Patrica Monture (as was then), on
aboriginal children and the Children's Aid Society. It is regard to the
number of children taken off the reserves in Canada and sent to the states.
Fortunately I am in the process of setting up my filing system and have
everything right here:

Title:A Vicious Circle: Children Welfare and the First Nations
(1989) Vol III, CJWL/Rifd

The article is in response to the sentencing of an aboriginal boy who
murdered his step-father after several years of sexual abuse. Her issue
is that the social services were negligent in their treatment of
aboriginal children when they "scooped" thousands of children from the reserve.

The numbers she is referencing are 15,500. She cites H. Phillip Hepworth
"Foster Care in Canada" (Ottawa: Canadian Council on Social Development
1980), 112. she says, (it was inpossible to locate complete statistics
more recent than 1980 on the issue of First Nations and child welfare. Is
it an indication, in itself, of the importance Candain social agencies
placed on this problem?
