INDIAN BAND `WOULD BUY' APEX SKI HILL IF IT HAD CASH
====================================================
By Mike Crawley, Vancouver Sun
The Penticton Indian band is interested in buying the ski hill that is
the focus of its protests.
The band's economic development officer, Stewart Philip, said Wednesday
that the band would buy Apex Mountain Resort if it had the money.
"We would acquire it just to ensure this notion of creating another
Whistler up there would come to an end," said Phillip. "If we had the
money, we would do it."
He said the 700-member band would run Apex as a local ski hill, stopping
plans to expand it to a destination resort.
The band and its consultants from Price Waterhouse met with Apex
officials in 1993 to discuss buying the property. Phillip said company
representatives walked out of the talks.
But Fraser Martin, Apex's president, said the band asked the company to
put together a proposal for selling the hill but wanted information that
could not be revealed legally. The company has since setn the band
information about the resort to see if it's still interested, but has
not received a reply, said Martin.
