INDIANS SUGGEST STANCE ON APEX ROAD FLEXIBLE
by Mike Crawley, Vancouver Sun
PENTICTON - Three Indian bands are hinting at a change in their stance
in the deadlocked negotiations that prompted a protest on a major
highway Friday.
About two dozen members of the Penticton, Upper Similkameen and Lower
Similkameen native Indian bands slowed traffic on Highway 97 to draw
attention to their dispute with the provincial government.
Until now, the bands have insisted there is no way they will agree to
give the province jurisdiction over the road through the Penticton
Indian reserve to Apex Mountain Resort, the target of a month-long
roadblock last year.
But on Friday, the man who speaks for the bands would not say that
transferring control of the road is out of the question.
Asked if there's anything the province can offer that would persuade the
bands to hand over the road, Stewart Phillip replied: "Is a question
that doesn't have an answer at the moment."
