NATIVES SET TO PICKET
RCMP will be on hand
--------------------
by Johnathan McDonald
Staff Reporter
Three Indian bands plan to picket Highway 3A near Penticton today.
They'll hand out pamphlets for three hours starting at 11 a.m. at
Kaleden Junction, where Highway 3A intersects Highway 97.
The Penticton, Upper Similkameen and Lower Similkameen bands have
claimed the land.
RCMP will try to keep the traffic flowing.
"We can never please all the people all the time," said Sgt. Peter
Montague. "This is no different from the way we'd handle a labour
dispute or a political protest."
The natives, opposed to a proposed $20-million development at Apex
Mountain ski resort, are protesting a breakdown in negotiations with
Victoria.
