Australia: aboriginal children taken from parents

There was a brief story on the BBC radio news last night talking about
how as many as 60,000 (sixty thousand) aboriginal children had been
taken from their parents at a young age in Australia in a government
program aimed deliberately at forced assimilation. The program, which
lasted until the mid-sixties, according to the report, is now being
labelled genocide and the people who were its victims are being called
"the lost generation." I believe there are efforts being made to seek
compensation for the effects of this policy (not that any amount of
money could ever put right such a terrible thing).

Does anyone have further details about this story?

Thanks.

Gary
