ONEIDA INDIAN NATION TERRITORY, via Oneida, NY -- The
Oneida Indian Nation now employees 2,134, and is the second largest
employer in Madison-Oneida County area. The Nation has increased
its Native workforce to 25 % (from 12% in the past year), with a
balance of 75% non-Indian. The Nation likely is the largest employer
of Native people in the State. The Oneida Nation hires under a policy
of Native American preference and has a commitment to 100%
employment of Nation Members at Nation-operated programs and
enterprises. Any Oneida Member may find employment with the
Nation providing two criteria are met: the person must meet the
qualifications of the position applied for, and the person must
perform up to the standards of the position, according to Ray
Halbritter, Nation Representative and chief executive officer of
Nation Enterprises.
A few years ago, when Nation enterprises were comprised of a
modest high-stakes bingo and small smoke shop, the Nation had just
four employees. Now, with 8 enterprises and 18 office locations in a
10-mile radius, the Nation is a prominent employer and a positive
economic player in the local economy. The employee base is broken
