The native peoples of what is known as French Polynesia comprise
78% of the population according to the statistics of the French
government. Most of the rest of the population are Chinese and
French/Europeans, or they are of mixed race. Of course, there
are those that believe these statistics are meant to support
the status quo and really understate the native population.

The French colonized these islands in 1880 after gaining initial
control in 1842. Since that time there has been native elements
who have maintained the struggle for Tahitian independence.
Currently, Oscar Temaru is the leader fo the Tavini Huiraatira,
the Tahitian Independence Party. In the last territorial elections,
he took 44.3% of the vote despite a system which strongly favors
the pro-French parties and very limited resources. The independence
movement has used the nuclear tests to highlight the exploitation
of the native peoples by the French colonial government.

For a long time, attempts were made to encourage the migration
of Europeans to settle in the area. The high real estate costs,
the world wide recession, and the local poor employment situation
have helped to stem the tide of population displacement. Still,
the economy is still structured to increase dependence on France,
and to benefit the small European minority.

To support the Tahitian people, please read the following list
of products and boycott them until a change in the French policy.
