INTERNATIONAL ELECTION OBSERVER DELEGATION
TO
CHIAPAS
OCTOBER 12-19, 1995
Serve as an International Observer of Statewide Elections in
Chiapas on October 14
On October 14, there will be statewide elections held throughout
Chiapas. Due to the long history of electoral fraud and
corruption in Chiapas, international observers are needed to
ensure that the results of the elections reflect the will of the
people. Members of this seventh Pastors for Peace delegations
will work with Mexican activists from the Fray Bartolome Center
for Human Rights, the social justice wing of the Diocese of San
Cristobal de las Casas, CONPAZ, a coalition of non-profit
organizations, and CONAI, Bishop Samuel Ruiz' mediary
organization, to foster a truly democratic process of electing
officials in Chiapas.
Contribute to a Peaceful Solution to the Conflict
Serve as an international observer to the seventh round of peace
talks in San Andreas de Larrainzar. The presence of international
observers encourages both sides to work towards finding a peaceful
resolution to the conflict and sends a strong message to the
Mexican military that any of their actions to influence the peace
process have international implications. As an international
observer, you'll learn first-hand about the positions of the EZLN
and the Mexican governments on the topics of demilitarization and
democratic reform. By participating as an international observer
to the peace talks, you will be an integral part of this historic
event.
